Now that it is officially summer, it is time to enjoy some fun summer leisure activities in your free time. After all, as a health care professional, you are used to enduring long work hours and loads of stress; which doesn’t leave much time on a regular basis for quality family or “me” time.

Go to a local Farmer’s Market.

That means that you have plenty of options to enjoy a wide variety of garden fresh produce, local meats, freshly baked breads, flowers, hand-made summer accessories, and perhaps even listen to some local musicians all summer long. Visiting one of your local farmer’s markets each week allows you to enjoy the gorgeous weather and a nice stroll, support local vendors and small businesses, and ensures that you and your family have the best possible food on your table every week.

Explore local trails and state parks.

Missouri has an incredible assortment of trails and state parks for visitors to enjoy, so why not take a day for a scenic stroll or bike ride with friends or family. Studies have shown that walking significantly reduces stress levels and can help you maintain a healthy lifestyle, so why not enjoy some pleasant views and the wonders of nature at the same time? Or, not looking to make it a full-day event? Then check out St. Louis’ Forest Park to enjoy the location’s many trails and attractions, greenhouses and flower-filled gardens, golf courses and picnic areas, and so much more!

Take a dip in a local pool, stream, or go to a beach.

Everyone knows how hot and humid Missouri can get, and you don’t want to spend your free-time feeling sticky and over-heated. That is why it is the perfect excuse to go swimming in a local pool, or if you are lucky enough the pool in your backyard. If you are more adventurous, go hiking and find a nearby stream to float along or travel to the coast to get a taste of the beach. Go camping with friends and/or family.

Want to get away from the city for a while? Pack up your car and grab your family or a few friends and spend the weekend on a camping trip! It will be an easy and inexpensive getaway that will allow you to explore the surrounding nature, take a swim in a nearby river, go fishing or canoeing, and roast marshmallows under the stars.

Tour all the nearby wineries or breweries.

Much like the plethora of local trails and state parks, Missouri also has many wineries and breweries that are always great to visit. If you are in the St. Louis area, why not take a tour at Anheuser-Busch Brewery to see the incredible Clydesdales or check out the many small, local breweries that can be found all around. Or, if you are looking for some great wines, then check out some of the most scenic wineries found in Missouri. Get active with friends or join an outdoor exercise group.

If you are like many others, you probably make plenty of excuses not to stay active. During the Winter it is too cold. You don’t have an exercise buddy. You are too busy with work life. Well, no more excuses! Grab a friend and go jogging or bike riding, spend your mornings joining a yoga in the park group, or participate in a local Color Run. It will be the perfect way to sit back and relax, and watch your favorite teams give it their all this summer.

Volunteer to make the town a little greener and brighter.

While volunteering somewhat goes in the opposite direction of leisurely activities, doing good in your community can bring a sense of relaxation. You can choose to help a local organization, teach summer school, work a 5-K run, or plant flowers at an intersection. Anything you choose it guaranteed to bring a smile to someone’s face, while allowing you to be active in your community and outdoors at the same time.

Take advantage of local theme parks and museums.

We all know that St. Louis has lots of great family-friendly activities to enjoy, and it is difficult to see everything no matter if you are from out of town or a local. So, why not spend a weekend or two enjoying the local sites. From the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial to a bird’s eye view from the Gateway Arch, to the many thrill rides that await at Six Flags St. Louis or the Hurricane Harbor Water Park. Plus, don’t forget to check out the free attractions at the St. Louis Zoo or go on an adventure of the imagination at the Magic House and Butterfly House. There is also always the joys of the City Museum, where you can enjoy the giant playground of fun (no matter your age!), explore the thousands of sea creatures at the World Aquarium, or take classes and workshops at the Museum of Mirth, Mystery and Mayhem, the Elmslie and Sullivan architectural exhibit, the Saint Louis Science Center, and other great local finds.

Enjoy the local nightlife.

As big as St. Louis is, there is always great activities to enjoy, even at night! After enjoying a game, why not wander to downtown to relax, dance and enjoy a few drinks at some of the hottest dance clubs and bars the town as to offer. Westport Plaza has over 42-acres of local entertainment, from local dining to live music, or you and your friends can try out one of the local Escape Rooms that will help you hone your detective skills and have a blast at the same time.
